The ancient Chinese secret for creating content to die for
Published: Sat, 12/12/20
It's a great question.
And I believe the question has been answered already by martial artists in China & elsewhere probably thousands of years ago, and can be directly applied to content creation, too.
I call it:
"The Cookie Jar Secret"
Don't let the name I completely made up from my Western sensibilities and appetites fool you.
Here's how it works:
During one of my Wing Chun Kung Fu lessons, Sifu told me how, back when he was learning, he was taught that Kung Fu was like a cookie jar of knowledge, where students are always coming and taking cookies from it. But, rare is the student who ever becomes a master to the point where they put cookies back in the jar, by bringing something truly new to the discipline, to make their style better and more effective for everyone else and future generations.
Instead, everyone just takes, takes, and takes.
But if it weren't for those few putting cookies back, the style would grow stale.
And maybe even die out.
At least, that is how I remember him telling it.
Whatever the case, I've long observed it's the exact same thing with content creation.
In other words:
Yes, everyone who does content creation is a so-called expert these days. And everyone became an expert by reaching into the cookie jar of knowledge all the teachers of their subject who came before them taught and contributed to, and then learned how to do & now teach that particular subject via an info product or some other form of content. But most of them are not putting any “cookies” back into the cookie jar of their trade or discipline by adding something truly different or unique via their content.
Unfortunately, it ain't easy putting cookies back in by creating something unique.
If it was easy, everyone'd be doing it, and all content would be infinitely more valuable.
Thus, it means ruthless study & application of the fundamentals of what you do.
It means ruthlessly mastering those fundamentals, too.
And, just as important, it means ruthlessly applying them via years of in-the-trenches experience.
I don’t care what the topic, industry, profession, subject or product category is someone is creating content for, either — whether it’s mastering Kung Fu or mastering making the perfect hotdog. The very act of studying, doing, and mastering something will eventually give you insights into whatever the “what” you are studying, doing, and mastering is… and eventually you will have new cookies to add to that righteous cookie jar of knowledge from which others will take.
That's how you create content that's truly unique.
And if you do it right:
Amongst those students of yours taking the cookies you contributed to the jar out, someone will do the same thing to what you taught when you put more cookies back in that jar, further expanding knowledge for everyone.
And so the cycle goes.
So that’s my answer.
I will merely end with this:
Obviously, I can’t do any of the studying, doing, and applying whatever it is you are wanting to add “cookies” to the jar of your trade with for you.
Nobody can, Chuckles, that's the whole point.
But, I can do at least one thing for you.
And that one thing is showing you ways to make the process of creating content a lot faster, smoother, and easier for you when you do get to the point where you want to teach and put cookies back via creating that content.
