Why you should have zero guilt profiting from your Red Shirts

Let’s talk about Red Shirts.

Red Shirts is a Star Trek trope where — in the earlier shows at least — anyone outside of the main cast who had a red shirt on when they beamed down to a planet usually died. They were the expendable characters, not the main characters, and were the proverbial “sacrificial lambs” of the show.

Characters that were easily discarded, but necessary to the plot.

With their deaths nevertheless being necessary for ratings to further that plot.

We have our own versions of “Red Shirts” in marketing, too. These Red Shirts deserve no pity, and exist to serve you and build your business if you utilize them. However, hardly anyone realizes what they are, much less how to use them to raise your own box office gross. But that won’t be the case for anyone subscribed to “Email Players” by tomorrow’s deadline.

Because I teach this on page 18.

And, specifically, in the context of building your own marketing universe — which goes beyond lists, audiences, or so-called tribes.

All right, that’s it for now.
