When you see everyone crying, you can make a fortune selling tissues

About a month ago, I got the email below from a businessman in Spain.

There are several valuable lessons embedded within it.

And I share it not only as inspiration for anyone despairing over the buckling economy... but also as the proverbial back hand across the faces of those playing to not lose in business, when they should be playing to win. Especially those who spurned my advice back in March about tripling down on their emails and other marketing, to take advantage of the many opportunities the lockdown presented to businesses the world over.

Here goes:

Dear Ben,

My name is David, I´m from Spain, and I have been in your list since the 26th of december 2019.

I have read every single email since I joined and is not until today, after five long months, I decided to join email players (I must admit, sometimes has been really hard to resist, but it was for a reason). The first thing I would like to thank you for all the content you share with us and your emails. This is pure gold.

I would like to tell you why I have decided to join now and a couple of things I would like to share with you.

When all the quarantine started and you announced your live "elBenbo´s Quaranstream", I knew I had to watch it. Especially because I needed to hear from someone I respect that now it´s the time to take the risk and make things happen.

I´m a clarinet player (a classical one, who used to play in an symphony orchestra), but I´m not like most of my colleagues and I´m lucky to have been educated in marketing and business, so I have a "business" mentality.

The point is, during this quarantine, I have created two business. One is The first online clarinet academy for spanish-speaking, and the other is a website about copywriting where I offer my services (in spanish, of course).

Most of the people of my "niche", started "sharing" their music at the balconies because they "believed" that would help the people with the lock down and bullshit like this. Meanwhile, I took advantage to work on my mission. I respect everyone else decisions but I don´t agree with them.

The fact is, now all my fellows, musicians, artists and everyone else in this field, are crying or asking for money to the government.

Concert halls are lockdown and there are no concerts at all (and there won´t be in a few months). I understand the situation. But may be it was a good idea to think about this befores, instead of playing the horn on the balcony at 12:00 pm every day. (I´m not sure about that strategy).

During this time, I have built an email list of 230 people interested in my online clarinet academy (which will launch next week, the first of June). I have made more than 60 videos of content for my academy. I have mailed my list daily because I wanted to be there for them in these times.

Trying to find a solution and not an excuse.

I have been an early adopter for the Learnistic app, because it´s time to play offensive. To make things happen. Not asking for money or playing at the balcony to massage my own ego believing I´m offering a "service" (that no one asked for, btw).

I couldn´t join Email players before, I didn´t have the money. Believe me, sometimes it was hard. But now I know it´s time to push the envolope and make things happen.

When you sent yesterday´s email, I couldn´t agree with you more. There will always be people who take advantage of the opportunities, and another, will complain about it.

It´s life. There is a spanish said that says: "When some cry, others sell tissues".

Having said that.

Here I am. It´s my pleasure to be an email player. I´m ready, looking forward to learn and implement everything you teach.
