Why copywriters are like flies on the same turd

Published: Thu, 06/18/20

To paraphrase the late writer Charles Bukowski:

“The worst thing for a copywriter is to know another copywriter, and worse than that, to know a number of other copywriters. Like flies on the same turd.”

Case in point:

Last month, a pal of mine up in this business sent me a text message asking if I’d be interested in checking out some copywriting software that does a lot of the heavy lifting of writing sales copy for you.

My answer?

“Doesn’t interest me in the slightest.”

I’ve heard of software like this before.

And back in my social media days, I remember seeing an entire Twitter thread with dozens of replies full of newbies & amateurs with half mast John Thomases at the very thought of something supposedly writing their copy for them.

I’m always amused by people trying to cut corners with copywriting, skirt around work, etc.

It's amateur at best.

And blatant cowardice at worst.

And I suspect anyone buying into that sort of shtick ain't exactly going to be lining up to buy my Copy Slacker book — even at the huge discount this weekend — nor should they. "Slacker" does not equal lazy, much to the chagrin of the copywriting fanboys. In fact, the research side takes a lot of work if someone doesn't already know their market.

All the book can do is shorten the time taken to *write* ads, not the amount of work.

Not to mention shatter any swipe file-addicted hopes.

Insist people do the work themselves from start to finish.

And, worst of all… demand people think & problem solve.

None of which are very popular these days.

But, it’s also why there really is no competition for anyone willing to do those things.

All right, let’s get on to the business.

If the above doesn’t scare you off, and you want the book at a fat $200 off the regular price discount, go here:
