The utter insanity of copying out online sales letters by hand

I am a huge fan and advocate of the late, great Gary Halbert’s advice to copywriters about copying out world class ads by hand to get that “neurological imprint” for writing world class copy.

I did this almost daily during the first 3 or 4 years up in this business.

And, I have never seen it not make a copywriter significantly better.

That is, assuming they are copying the right kind of ads out.

The key phrase is they must be “world class” ads.

Which, in my opinion, eliminates virtually all online sales letters — yes, including (especially!) my sales letters and other ads.

Why?

Because online ads get away with a lot of slop & bloat, making it an insane waste of time, and completely counterproductive in my experience. Especially when compared to old school direct mail and space ads — where it costed money, and sometimes a lot of money, just to test. Online, with email and other ways to pre-sell where the ad is almost just a formality in some cases, it simply ain’t the same.

Thus:

If you are going to do this, copy out old school world class copywriters’ ads.
