Advice for cold callers in these cold economic times

Last year, a question came in that is extremely relevant today:

Hi Ben,

As an expert marketer, what is your take on cold calling? Do you think it works to get copywriting clients? It works for me but there is a lot negativity surrounding cold calling. I know goes against the silver rule of marketing and makes it seem like you are not busy with work when you call.

But isn't that only in different stages with one's business?

What is your take?

My take is this:

I have witnessed entire businesses being built in the span of a week just with a telephone and the Yellow Pages.

So for me to say it doesn’t “work” would be silly.

I will say this though:

If you are a freelance copywriter, a freelance coach, a freelance consultant, a freelance service provider of any kind… and if you want to save yourself an enormous amount of time… and if you are going to cold call, then I highly recommend at least starting with cold calling customers who are ALREADY spending money on whatever it is you are selling.

i.e., clients already hiring copywriters, coaches, or whatever it is you do.

In other words, sell to buyers.

There are some people who are inhumanly good at this sort of thing who can safely ignore this advice, I suppose. But even for them, what is much better is having a multi-layered business model in place that:

(1) Brings clients to you (instead of you going to them)

(2) Has a subscription business attached to it

(3) Gives you enough financial stability where you are never “needy” when you do talk to clients — whether cold or warm calling

This is what I teach in the April “Email Players” issue. It is my business model “adapted” to client type businesses.

There is a lot of info info-publishers can use inside this April issue that I am also rapidly prepping to implement should I not be able to resist the coming demand for such services I foresee, and that is already here in many cases.

The deadline to get this issue is in a few days.
