In the interview I mentioned earlier today, the great John Carlton mentioned something about how Jim Rutz was like a copywriting contradiction:
He was probably more in touch with the human experience than anyone.
Yet, he was 100% self-exiled from the culture.
For example, in the interview John says:
“When I found out [Jim] was still a virgin, at the tender age of whatever it was, 40 at the time? I’m not sure. That just baffled me. It was like, ‘Wait, you live in America, in this orgy time.’”
Jim also apparently didn’t even own a TV.
May or may not have listened to music or talk radio, either.
And, would get popular sayings completely wrong without realizing it.
Yet, despite all this, he was wired into the human experience in such a way where he could pound out control ads with such a hair-raising degree of consistency, he would often work on pure commission, with no upfront fee, against the most successful & talented A-list copywriters in the world.
He was a complete original in every way.
