When to press that evil client ejection button

"Email Players" subscriber Anthony Langford shares this hair-raising tale of client self-sabotage...

Hey Ben

Email players sub from the UK here, and I’ve got a pretty funny story for ya…

Over the past year + I’ve been using your wicked ways to make myself and my clients a hand-sum amount of money which has been great. But, as the saying goes "there’s always one" ( always one dick who doesn’t appreciate it).

Here’s a very short version of events:

So me and my brother run an advertising agency here in the UK, and a couple months ago we signed this client in the health and fitness niche. Things were going really well, up until recently when I agreed to write him an email campaign for a deadline offer. After getting to work on writing 13 emails for a 3 day flash membership sale, I explained how I would be setting up the campaign to fire off 3 emails on the first day, another 3 on the second day, and then 7 on the final day of the promotion. I also explained he would probably get a few people moaning about the volume of emails they were receiving too. But told him its a good thing to get rid of the people who complain because the likelihood is they would never buy anyway.

After spending a couple of hours writing these emails for him. (And then a couple more linking them up to his shitty auto responder). We set about bidniz and waited for sales to roll in. Day 1 and 2 was good as we pulled in a few sales but as always I expected the response to be much bigger on the last day of the campaign purely because of the deadline…

Anyway halfway in to the last day of the promotion this dude sends me an message demanding that I stopped the emails from going out because its "just to much” and people were complaining!

My simple response to his stupid email: But are you getting sales?

To which he replied: “Yes we’ve had 10 sales today but people are complaining so I don’t want any more emails going out, please just turn them off, head office said we need to stop”.

Which if I am quite honest really pissed me off, so I just ignored him and let the emails continue to roll out…

This dude later went on to his autoresponder and turned off the remaining scheduled emails himself. At which point was the final straw for me... and I swiftly pressed the client eject button.

I just can’t understand why anyone would beg you to stop making them money? it isn’t something I thought would ever happen if am honest.

I mean, is this normal behaviour?

Just wondered what your thoughts are on this? I have zero patients for idiots and would rather just burn the bridge.

Anyway props to you man, just wanted to ad to your ever growing list of testimonials by saying the stuff you teach is golden. keep up the good work brother!

Just another reason why I shun client work like the bigfoot apocalypse plague.

Anyway, do with that cautionary tale what you will...

All right, since I am not afraid of people complaining and also want to make sales, I have no problem whatsoever blatantly plugging my newsletter.

The next issue mails soon.

Starting tomorrow I will likely send 2 or more per day promoting it.

Which is ironic.

Especially since, this particular issue is full of lessons I can guarantee will horrify pretentious and nervous Nelly clients like the one described above.
