Dragged kicking and screaming into the coaching business

Even if you have zero interest in joining, there is a lot of value between the lines.
That is, if you have the wits to catch them all.
Here goes:

Before you read any further, some context:
I am unabashedly “pro” info products.
Courses, books, eBooks, membership sites, newsletters, video/audio programs… your C’App’n loves ‘em all, uses ‘em all, and even sells ‘em all in one form or another. Not only do they allow people to learn at their own pace and speed, but you can go back through them, bring them with you, and basically plunder them over and over and over and “own” that info for the rest of your life.
So yes, I love courses.
But, there is also a reality to courses only the intellectually honest info publishers admit.
Take my partner on this ship Ben Settle.
He ONLY sells info products, with no desire to do coaching.
And he has, by his own admission, never hired a single business or marketing-related coach, consultant, or one-on-one teacher in his entire life.
He probably never will, either.
Although even he admits he “never says never.”
But, he does have a coach of sorts in another area:
Wing Chun kung fu.
I’ve been to his lair, and his office has a big wooden dummy he practices on, with two giant wall posters next to it of the man he says is the “Grandmaster” doing a 108-count set of movements that he can look at, emulate, and practice as he trains on his dummy.
There are also ample videos on YouTube that he can buy on the subject, too.
Not to mention other programs he could access.
Yet, despite this, he drives 6 hours round trip to learn at his Sifu’s feet each month, in person, to a town he despises (Roseburg, OR — or as he calls it “The Burgle”), and sometimes at great inconvenience to his dog, family, business and other intellectual pursuits he’d much rather be doing than doing all that driving to a town he despises.
Why does he do this?
Especially with all the info products he needs at his disposal?
Because, as he puts it:
“There are some things you simply can’t learn from a video or other info product. A sensitivity to a discipline you can only get by learning directly at the feet of a master, in their presence, with them correcting you, giving you real time feedback, and getting the most nuanced questions answered based on your own unique attributes & experiences.”
This applies to business, too.
Like I said, I have never meet anyone as anti-coaching as Ben Settle, frankly.
He has never once hired a business/marketing coach, has never needed to, and his 7-figure info publishing company has done just fine without one. He has a sort of weird arrogance about the whole thing from building the EXACT kind of business and lifestyle he wants. And he simply is not motivated to get any kind of coaching outside of his favorite info products on the subject.
Yet, you know what he suggested to me when we FIRST partnered in software?
I could hardly believe when he said out of the blue:
“We should fly out and pay Dan Kennedy to get his advice on the topic of _____.”
I won’t tell you what topic.
That is a discussion for another time.
What’s important is what Ben admitted to me at that moment:
There is NOBODY in the world better at what we’d hire Dan to teach us.
Thus, it’s something even Ben — Mr. “I hate coaching” — Settle will hopping into a car and driving cross country (he doesn’t fly in this area of low IQ covid cultists, he says) to get COACHING from someone on a topic he knows we will need in order for our software companies to reach their full potential.
All of which brings me to the point:
Ben did NOT want to do the Profit Pirates coaching program at first.
And it took quite a bit of prodding, poking, pushing, and outright pleading with Ben to even consider doing it. He hates coaching as much as he hates the idea of going to a coach. He hates babysitting people, and answering questions about things he thinks are just common sense (I told you he is an arrogant swab about these things!) But he realized, like with his Wing Chun and with what we want to learn from Dan Kennedy, there are customers who really need our one-on-one feedback, coaching, and guidance. And who will appreciate it, not disrespect our time or knowledge, and, most importantly, will USE what we teach and make lots of money and make us proud.
