How to shave weeks off your copywriting research time

Behold an astonishing copywriting tale from The Burgle:

Over in Roseburg, OR (i.e., The Burgle) where I once lived for a couple years… one of my favorite wineries (Hillcrest) is owned by a savvy and extremely talented wine maker named Dyson. Last time I was there he was explaining why his wines are so good compared to many others — such as how he does everything old school still, knows the history of his grapes, often travels to Europe to study the masters, and so forth.

Anyway, he said something last time that I have never forgotten:

“The secret is there are no secrets”

He was talking about making wine.

But, it’s just as true for writing million dollar earning sales letters.

Case in point:

I was once helping one of my customers who was struggling with re-writing a sales letter for a client. The customer was stuck on “what” to say in the ad to keep it interesting and not stale (like most ads), and was experiencing all the usual overwhelm, stress, and anxiety a lot of copywriters go through in a similar situation.

“Ben, what should I do???”

I then went on to show my customer a truly “fool proof” research technique I use for getting un-stuck and banging out ads (that I have used on many of my highest-converting sales letters).

The result?

In 15-minutes the ad was completely different.

It was more exciting.

More interesting.

And, yes, far more profitable.

Plus, the customer's client (from what I hear) was happy as a pig in pewp with it .

Now, some would ask:

“Ben what copywriting trick did you use!?”

And they’d be disappointed.

It wasn’t a “trick.”

Because, again, like with a master wine maker, the secret is there is no secrets. It’s simply something I do in my ads (and emails) that is so laughably obvious it astonishes me so few others do it when doing research for their sales letters. Something that shaves days (if not weeks) off my research time. Something that is so simple that people chasing shiny little “ninja secrets” certainly will never get because it’s not sexy enough for them.

Anyway, this little ditty is on pages 33-34 in my “Copy Slacker” book.

It’s on sale at a fat $200 off the regular price discount — $524 vs $724 — until tonight, 6/20 at midnight (EDT).

After that I am hiking the regular price which is long overdue.

P.S. Speaking of research:

Omezikam Ugwa — who got the book as a bonus for another offer a couple years ago — chimes in on how helpful it was for this most critical part of the process:

“Just reading the first few chapters and the part on Research is so detailed you can easily rip it out and sell as a course on its own. A lot of us new copywriters either take it for granted or get confused about what to really look for.”
