"Founding father” of podcasting’s secret to doing irresistibly compelling interviews

Admittedly, I am not a big fan of interviewing people.

Mostly because I dislike talking to people by phone, skype, zoom, or in any other media unless I am giving the interview/talk/teaching, for list building purposes. If anything, I have structured my life so I can be on the phone as little as humanly possible — including not even having to make routine appointments, etc.

Even my friends & family realize email is best.

But, I have picked up a lot of tricks for conducting interviews when required.

Including doing interviews people have a hard time pulling themselves away from, so I am told.

The big secret, in my experience?

What my friend and frequent JV partner over the last 17 years Michael Senoff does in all his interviews. I believe Michael is officially one of the “founding fathers” of podcasting. He was doing audio online interviews & shows since way before the term was even coined. And, he has done probably tens of thousands of hours of interviews.

The big secret I learned from him?

He told me:

“What I do is I sit down and I tell them, ‘I want ten stories from you about the topic.’ And people will tell stories. And they will get lost in their own stories, just like Gene Schwartz said will happen. And that's how you get the really good stuff.”

Many ways to apply this to the business of marketing and/or copywriting.

Especially if you do client work or hate selling your own stuff.

But that is a topic for another day.

In the meantime:

While I don’t conduct interviews, I do give a lot of them.

And I have put many hours of the best of them in my Ben Settle mobile app.

They’re free.

They’re easily listened to right on your phone.

And they cover just about every topic under the sun.
