The ad man that made a money sack out of Mac

Here’s a story about a true “legend” in marketing Charles Roman.

According to a New York Times article back in 1999 (after his death), Charles Roman was a fledgling $35-a-week account executive at the Benjamin Landsman Advertising Agency in New York in 1928. That’s when he met the infamous Charles Atlas, who was a champion bodybuilder whose business was small.

The NYT article states:

“Mr. Roman told Mr. Atlas that the advertising he had been using was not working. Months afterward, Mr. Roman became Mr. Atlas's partner in their new company, Charles Atlas Ltd. Mr. Roman went on to become the sole owner in 1969 and sold the enterprise to Mr. Hogue in 1997 but he maintained an influence on its operations until his death.”

I think it’s fair to say Roman is the only reason that company thrived.

And, in fact, the only reason anyone knows who they are at all.

Take, for example, Mr. Roman’s glorious ad:

“How An Insult Made A Man Out Of Mac”

That ad — or, at least, variations of it — ran from the 1920’s through the 50’s & 60’s, 70’s and maybe is even still used in some form today.

Very powerful.

As were many of Roman’s ideas.

And Charles Atlas’s celebrity appeal and info products combined with Charles Romans’ advertising, marketing, PR (i.e., when Charles Atlas broke a metal bar in front of 3,000 convicts, Roman telephoned tabloid newspapers and suggested a headline: “Man Breaks Bar at Sing Sing Prison — Thousands Cheer, None Escape” beautiful…), & overall business prowess created an empire that is still going strong to this day.

Which brings us full circle:

Yesterday I talked about how I picked my moderator/HBIC in my insanely-addictive & profitable old elBenbo’s Lair Facebook group. And also how I used the same psychology behind why I picked her (there are dozens of people I could have chosen — including a very popular fitness marketer with an audience of 40,000 people) Johnny Carson (probably without even realizing it) used when picking his right hand man Henry Bushkin.

Well, guess what?

Charles Atlas used the same psychology when picking Charles Roman.

Whether deliberately or on accident, I don’t know.

But I do know if you are ever looking for anything from a social media moderator to a business partner to a great right hand employee… you can use the same psychology. It’s the exact same psychology behind brilliant military operations. And that helped create Apple Computer. And, yes, that has created extremely successful direct marketing businesses.

All is revealed in my new Social Lair book.

After this week’s launch the book will sell for $555.00.

But, until tomorrow, Friday 4/23 at midnight EST it’s $150.00 off ($405.00).
