One thing Trump got right
Published: Tue, 04/20/21
But the most powerful was:
Narrative-building.
He was good at creating media Narratives, hijacking his enemies’ Narratives, and imposing his own Narratives. For example, a lot of those weird Tweets people constantly complained about — including his biggest fans — were sometimes a distraction for something else he was doing (putting Federal judges in on the sneak, etc). He is, after all, a talented showman if nothing else. And showmanship is all about subterfuge, timing, pacing, withholding, building up to moments and, yes, misdirecting when necessary.
I don’t think Trump was some secret genius playing “4dEe cHeSs!” or whatever.
But for someone who was being attacked from all sides — including by his own administration & party & leak-happy staff from within — he did one helluva job on the Narrative-building side.
Which brings me to the lesson:
We live in a world full of ever-competing Narratives.
Few of these Narratives are good for anyone but those who set them. And chances are, no matter how free, independent, or critical a thinker you pride yourself on being, you are following the Narrative of someone else, somewhere else, in some way, shape, or form.
The news you choose to get your information from has a Narrative.
The teachers you learn from have a Narrative.
The people who make the entertainment you consume have a Narrative.
The people you vote for, trust your money with, and let hang around you & your family have a Narrative.
Everyone has a Narrative.
And when it comes to a social media presence — which is, by its nature, potentially quite chaotic & unpredictable — it’s vital to create and maintain your own Narrative at all times. Especially if you want to monetize it properly and get the almost unbelievable engagement my old elBenbo’s Lair Facebook group got on a daily basis. Sometimes to the point where some people would get tossed in “Facebook jail” from posting so much the site’s algorithms assumed they were bots.
I talk a LOT about building your own Narratives in my new Social Lair book.
After this week’s launch the book will sell for $555.00.
But, until Friday 4/23 at midnight EST it’s $150.00 off ($405.00).
