The insanity of giving guarantees on freelancing services

How would you structure your email copywriting services to make your offer more irresistible to potential clients? I was thinking maybe you could offer a guarantee…if they’re not happy with the emails you wrote the first time, you’ll make unlimited revisions until they’re happy with it.

Or maybe if they don’t make back at least 3x what they paid you, you’ll keep writing more emails that they can test for free until they do get that ROI as a way of lowering their risk of hiring you.

Of course, that’s assuming they have a quality list and offer already in place.

Anyway, just curious to know what your thought are on that.

The biggest problem with guarantees for services like that is, you are looking for ways to qualify yourself to them, when it is they who should be qualifying themselves to you.

Which is a function not of guarantees, but of positioning.

Even worse:

It’s like the great sales trainer & author Barry Maher said about this when Michael Senoff interviewed him many years ago. Barry realized offering a guarantee on his consulting services let clients sell themselves against his services to justify their decision to ask for a refund.

It’s an insidious thing.

And it happens selling information, software, and other products, too.

It’s one of many reasons I refuse to offer guarantees on any of my products.

All that does is let clients & customers sell themselves “against” your products or services when they either don’t use or don’t properly use your advice, sales copy, services, products, etc.

They are either in or out.

No room for wishy-washy clients.

So what works better?

That can be found within the pages of the May “Email Players” issue.

Specifically, I give 6 things — that takes exactly 50 words to describe, very simple — to do that makes the question obsolete in the first place, that virtually anyone can do.

Whether you WILL do it, is another matter, of course.

But, I will say this here:

None of this is rocket science or brain surgery. But, when you understand how the client game really works, you can potentially make much more than a rocket scientist or brain surgeon, with a fraction of the effort and none of the schooling.

There’s never been a better time to be alive for freelancers of all stripes.
