The greatest sales book you never heard of
Published: Thu, 12/17/20
“Ten Greatest Sales Persons”
It was written in 1978.
And admittedly, the majority of it is extremely boring.
But the first chapter is very likely the single greatest power lesson on selling — online or offline, phone or in person — I’ve ever read. Specifically, it’s an interview with the late, great Joe Girard who was the Guinness Book Of World Records’ “World’s Greatest Salesman” for many years. He consistently outsold every car sales man by a country mile year in, and year out. And he did it by selling in such a way where his customers couldn’t help but tell all their friends, family, co-workers, even complete strangers about him.
But he didn’t do it with any magical closes.
He probably (I don’t know either way) had never heard of NLP.
And frankly, after reading some of his other books, I doubt he was even a smooth talker.
No, his ace in the hole secret was:
Superior Service.
That’s it.
In the book I mentioned above, he talks about all the things he did for anyone who he talked to at the car dealership. This man was selling “boring” Chevrolets but you’d think he was giving away gold bricks to people who visited him. He made the experience of buying from him unique, fun, and a pure joy. Like, for example, having a drink with the customer (he had all the brands of liquor for them, and colored water for himself, not being one to drink at work). And giving the customer’s kids toys and candy. And even, during slow times, visiting his customers at their place of work just to see how things are going in their lives and with their families, and with the car they bought from him.
My favorite part of what he did:
“When he comes back [to have his car serviced], I fight for him all the way to get him the best…when somebody calls me and says, ‘I’ve been in twice, Joe, and nobody wanted to take care of me,’ I say, “That’s your problem, ‘cause do you remember me saying that if you ever have a problem, you should ask for me? Now why don’t you come in around ten o’clock tomorrow and let me take care of it for you. And when he does I really go to bat for him. I find out who can help. If our service department can’t do it, then I find out who can. Is it the factory man? If [he] can’t do it, I go over his head to his boss…if I gotta, I’ll go right to Mr. Murphy, the chairman of the board of General Motors!”
It's like... sales poetry.
And it’s not like any of what he did was brain surgery either.
He simply thought constantly about how to service his customers, really look out for them, so they would not even dream of buying a car from anyone else and couldn’t help but tell all their friends, family, and peers about him, and how awesome it was and what a privilege it was to buy a car from him.
This is not a tactical thing as much as it is an inner game thing.
And it can make even the most boring and mundane offer exciting for people to buy.
Which brings me to the rub:
Mr. Vance Morris.
Vance is by far the single best resource for learning how to merge customer service with direct response marketing to exponentially ratchet up sales I’ve ever known. He spent 10 years working at Disney — including designing, opening & operating “Chef Mickey’s” (Disney’s flagship Character Dining Experience). He has also consulted everyone from NASA & the Executive Office of the United States to Tyson Foods & The Smithsonian. And, he has even shared the stage teaching his world class business and service genius with some of the top direct marketers in the world — like Dan Kennedy and Joe Polish.

Frankly, I got so worked up Stefania was worried I’d pop a blood vessel.
That ain’t no exaggeration, either.
