Spelling nazi turncoat uses my typo-ridden ways to land $4k-$6k days

Published: Sat, 09/30/17

“Email Players” subscriber Caitlin Pyle (who owns a 7-figure proof reading company — whoda thunk it?) turns coat on her industry, and reveals how even proof readers can profit from my hideous typo-ridden ways:

(While dropping quite a few profitable lessons to boot while she's at it...)

Hey Elbenbo!

I'm a new subscriber who's been poring over your cribsheet and the Email Players Playbook as I wait for my first issue of the newsletter.

I was reading the playbook this week and got to page 45's "Don't Be a Perfectionist" -- specifically the line that says "A misspelling here and there, nobody's going to care, and anyone who does care and isn't going to buy because of that, they're not a good prospect, unless of course you're selling proofreading..."

I LAUGHED OUT LOUD when I read this because Ben, I *am* selling proofreading :-D

In fact, I've been selling proofreading business courses since February 2015 and have earned more than $2.5 million so far.

Thanks to you, I recently upped the ante on my emailing and have had regular $4000-$6000 days -- even though it's supposed to be the slow period. I'm on track to earn $150,000 this month from proofreading-course revenue alone. Our record month was $208,000 (April).

I have actually lost customers because of errors. Someone unsubbed from my list once because they saw an error in a blog post and that "didn't bode well" for her. Hah.

Thing with proofreader prospects is that so many of them think they're perfect!! That's a fun market to deal with... said no one ever.

Just last week someone was wreaking some serious havoc in our paid-student FB group over some errors she found in my newest course I released in April. Said if she's buying a proofreading course, it should be perfect.

When we told her we were actively improving and expanding the course and that those improvements and expansions were included in her lifetime access, she said "I'd rather have my $500 back."

Rather than give her her money back, though... we hired her as an intern.

(She did NOT see that coming :-))

She's going to EARN her $500 back by fixing the errors in the course and making sure all the new content/worksheets we add are perfect. She gets hands-on training and a firsthand look at just how difficult it is to build an online course without errors... we get a well-trained student and don't have to spend our in-house $ on proofreading.

WIN, WIN.

I've always been open and honest with my audience about imperfections, but learning from you has allowed me to take it to the next level. The one I wrote about my ugly feet was a winner.

I'm forwarding you a copy of it so you can see it; it's below.

I've also written about how I left for a three-day trip to my mom's house (two hours away) but forgot my suitcase at home... so I had to buy underwear at the dollar store. Included a photo of my dollar store receipt as proof for the skeptics. That was a hit too :-)

I'm finding that breaking away from always having to send people to my blog (I used to use the teaser email HEAVILY) has paid off really quickly. Some folks have written in to tell me that my emails have brought them to tears because they're so on point with where they are at the moment. "It's like you read my mind!" they say.

I also write MORE than I used to -- I used to think anything less than 700 words wasn't good enough to where I wouldn't bother, but now I know that it is more than good enough; it's better!

I have you to thank for that, Ben!

So: thank you. Haven't even gotten the first hard-copy newsletter yet and I'm already a huge fan.

Much love,
Caitlin Pyle
