Blasphemy!

You’d think I blasphemed a major religion yesterday when I announced the Ben Settle Show podcast would no longer be free. One person flat out said I was being dumb and NEED (it was in all caps, so you know he was serious) to do what other podcasters are doing like ____ [fill in all the big name podcasters -- he named several], and that I’m making a huge mistake, etc etc.
Are these naysayers right?
We will see when we launch this bad boy.
But, I will say this:
After 123 podcast episodes, I decided it was time to make a radical shift in the podcast and turn it into a paid product (as part of a new monthly membership site I call “elBenbo’s Apprentice”) instead of free like practically everyone else’s podcast for several reasons. For one, Producer Jonathan has been scolding me for almost two years I give away way too much free info that others have had to pay for. (And he’s right — I never intend to, but once I get caught up in teaching something, well…) I also have zero desire to follow the podcasting crowd who are always desperately chasing numbers of downloads, iTunes rankings, iTunes reviews, paid sponsorships, and the list goes on.
Nothing wrong with those things.
And, them podcasters can do whatever they want.
But, in my way of thinking, it’s a giant time suck.
And, it is much easier and more profitable to simply make mine a premium podcast and sell it via email like I do everything else — not to mention the Earl Nightengalism that’s never failed me:

“Look around at what everyone else is doing,
do the opposite, and you’ll probably never
make another mistake for as long as you live.”
Good advice.
Whether it's podcasting or anything else.
And, yes, that advice is free.
Of course, because it's free, few will act on it.
