elBenbo shoots off pinkie toe with paid podcast shtick

Comes an excellent question:

“I have a question about you killing your podcast I wanted to get your thought process on..... Isn't this shooting oneself in the foot? Since it goes off iTunes won't that stop the new flow of prospects to your business? If you stop giving a try water it stops growing cause it doesn't have the stuff it needs to grow. Again, not complaining here...honestly trying to figure how it's a good thing for you? As I am going into the podcast space this could help me tremendously from your experiences.”

Here’s the way I see it:

Most people have way too narrow a view of podcasting. They think they need to play by the same rules as guys like John Lee Dumas (who I am a big fan of, btw, he's brilliant), and platforms like iTunes and Stitcher, etc.

You can still do very well playing by those rules.

And, certain people do.

But, I believe most are enslaved to and limited by those rules — always begging for reviews, chasing downloads & sponsors, and way too dependent on Apple.

Me?

I see it as not unlike The Matrix movies.

Allow your pal to paraphrase the ending:

“….I don’t know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it’s going to begin. I’m going to put out this premium podcast [that doesn’t rely on iTunes, rankings, reviews, or sponsorships], and then I'm going to show these people what you don’t want them to see. I’m going to show them a podcast business model that works without you. A model without rules and controls, without income ceilings or boundaries. A business model where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you…”

Ooh.

I admit the okey-doke is strong with me on that one.

But, like Neo, I have NO idea how this will pan out.

It could fail or it could be a smashing success.

Either way, I’m taking my ball and playing a totally different game as everyone else. At the end of the day, I see my podcast as a product, not just a way to generate leads (my original purpose for starting it) or sponsored ads or whatever. A product one can easily send paid traffic to (or even free traffic to) just like any other product.

And, also like any other product, it can be sold.

And, like any other product, it *should* be sold.

That is, after all, the elBenbo way…
