Beaten up by the Email Dummy

And, mayhaps you'll find this helpful:
One of the ways I practice is on a wooden dummy. If you’ve never seen one, it is solid wood with 3 “arms” and a leg. And, if you try to beat the thing up without knowing how to strike properly it “hits” back surprisingly hard. In fact, when I first got started over a year ago my forearms, wrists, and even my biceps were often covered in huge bruises.
But you know what?
It didn’t cripple me.
Didn’t knock me out.
And, certainly never caused any permanent damage.
In that way it was a very *forgiving* medium.
I can go right back the next day, learn from my mistake, and get better as a result.
On the other hand:
If I were to fight a Wing Chun master who knows how to strike with 100+ lbs of force (it only takes 30 lbs of force to knock a grown man out), and if he didn't modulate his attacks, your pal elBenbo would wind up with damaged organs, broken bones, and be in the hospital.
(Assuming I survived at all.)
So that would NOT be a very forgiving medium.
I would NOT be able to go back the next day for more.
And, I would NOT escape permanent damage to my body.
And so it is with your emails:
Even if you screw something up and get bruised by saying something stupid or incorrect or whatever, you can come right back the next day and make things right, fix the record, or clarify what you said. You won’t be out tens of thousands of dollars (like you might be if you screw up a direct mail campaign, for example). You won’t be out of business and have to lay off employees because you screwed up. And, you can take what you learned from your mistake and even profit from it.
(If you know how, another lesson for another day…)
So anyway, yes I’m preaching to the choir here.
But, that’s okay.
Even people in the choir sin and stray and need reminders at times.
