How to shave weeks off your copywriting research time

And, over in The Burgle one of my favorite wineries (Hillcrest) is owned by a savvy and extremely talented wine maker named Dyson. Last time I was there he was explaining why his wines are so good compared to many others — such as how he does everything old school still, knows the history of his grapes, often travels to Europe to study the masters, and so forth.
Anyway, he said something last time that I have never forgotten:
“The trick is
there are no tricks”
He was talking about making wine.
But, it’s just as true for writing million dollar earning sales letters.
Case in point:
I was hanging out with my ex-copywriting apprentice a little while back at a pub in town here, and she was struggling with re-writing a sales letter for a client. She was stuck on “what” to say in her ad to keep it interesting and not stale (like most ads), and was experiencing all the usual overwhelm, stress, and anxiety a lot of copywriters go through in a similar situation.
“Ben, what should I do???”
“Relax ex-copywriting apprentice,” I replied.
And then went on to show her a truly “fool proof” technique I use for getting un-stuck and banging out ads (that I have used on many of my highest-converting sales letters).
The result?
In 15-minutes her ad was completely different.
It was more exciting.
More interesting.
And, yes, far more profitable.
Plus, her client (from what I hear) was one happy gringette. .
All from a ridiculously simple trick I gave her.
Now, some would ask:
“Ben what copywriting trick did you show her!”
And they’d be disappointed.
It wasn’t a “trick.”
Because, again, like with a master wine maker, the trick is there is no tricks.
It’s simply something I do in my ads (and emails) that is so friggin’ obvious it astonishes me so few others do it when doing research for their sales letters. Something that shaves days (if not weeks) off my research time. Something that is so simple, probably some people (those chasing shiny little “ninja secrets” certainly) will never get because it’s not sexy.
Anyway, would you like to learn how to do this?
