Meet the “Stan Lee” of direct marketing

Recently, the great Stan Lee joined the choir invisible.

He was the guy who basically created modern comic books as we know it — including all the most popular characters like Spiderman, the X-Men, the Hulk, Daredevil, Black Panther, Fantastic Four, Avengers, and the list goes on. It’s no stretch to say that man’s brain — ideas, characters, stories, etc — have been worth, collectively, tens of billions of dollars in the form of comics, cartoons, live action movie, licensing deals, action figures, and the list goes on.

Well, guess what?

We have a “Stan Lee” of our own in the direct marketing world.

A man whose brain has been responsible — direct or indirectly, via his influence and work over 40 years — for probably billions of dollars too. Whether by his being at the top of one of the biggest direct marketing companies on the planet for nearly 40 years (including having a hand in all their billions of direct mail pieces mailed, internet campaigns, and even TV infomercial advertising)… whether by his own business ventures creating life-changing Masterminds and Masterclasses (I’ve seen how they change people firsthand, it ain’t no fluke)… by those who he has consulted and coached (including many A-list copywriters, and “for real” marketing legends, including many who are now long-deceased)… or by his weekly emails, which contain a certain kind of “depth” you simply don’t see in anyone else’s emails.

(Especially not in mine!)

This man has many other similarities to the great Stan Lee, too.

Like, for example:

* Same cheerful attitude

* Puts you at ease whenever you’re in his presence i.e. approachable

* Loves his fans and appreciates them, and never ceases to tell us whenever he has the opportunity

* Worked with all the greatest, most talented, actual legends and pioneers (again, many who are now long-deceased and you cannot tap their minds anymore without this guy’s help) of our industry, just like Stan Lee did in his industry

* Worked for decades for a hugely successful company then went off on his own

* Super connected in the industry — I daresay this gentleman is the “most connected” man in direct marketing as we know it

* Great at finding and recognizing talent

* Always looking out for everyone before himself

* Genuinely loves what he does, loves the industry, loves the people, and loves the work

Just like, you guessed it, Stan Lee did.

Anyway, who is this great man of direct marketing?

None other than the esteemed Brian Kurtz.

And, after hanging out with him multiple times, speaking at some of the same events, speaking at his own event twice, interviewing him for my former podcast for over 3 hours, studying his work and teachings for well over a decade before ever speaking with him… as well as being on his email list since 2014 and also an enthusiastic affiliate for two of his products… the elBenbo got an idea.

An awful idea.
