There are both psychological and obvious practical reasons for doing this.
Psychologically, it tells would-be clients you’re high value.
(Which means higher fees, less interference, more faith in you, and a host of other benefits.)
Plus, there’s a social proof thing going on:
Just like girls don’t want a guy nobody wants (“… what’s wrong with him?”) a lot of clients don’t really want to hire someone nobody else wants to hire. On the other hand, the fact you’re so in demand, with clients competing for your time, then you are automatically more desirable.
(Regardless of ability, in too many cases.)
And practically, it means job security.
Think of it this way:
Let’s say you are booked solid with clients. The sun is shining, the pigeons are crowing, and you’re basically in copywriting hog heaven. Then, for whatever reason, one of your clients drops out. Maybe they went out of business. Or maybe they found someone they think is better. Or, maybe they’re just flakey?
Whatever the case, there’s no need to panic.
That is, if you have a waiting list.
Because, all you do is send an email to them that says something like:
