The best invention for uncovering deceit since truth serum

Let me tell you one of my favorite Jim Camp stories.

Specifically, about getting the truth out of people with an agenda to outright screw you over.

The late Jim Camp (in case you subscribed to my list this weekend, where I am towards the end of an aggressive affiliate campaign selling a $597 product my friend Michael Senoff sells, you can get for just $20 until midnight tonight…) was called the world’s most feared negotiator. Jim’s methods are so powerful the FBI changed their terrorist negotiation strategies around what he taught them. And, his teachings are required reading at many of America’s top business schools.

Anyway, back to the story:

He had a CFO client and they were working on a contract in Korea in a Silicon Valley company.

And, turns out the Korean adversary was disingenuous.

At least, they suspected he was.

And to find out, and get to the truth, they started applying a negotiation principle based on a secret way of asking questions. I call it a “secret” mostly because so few people do it. But, it is, for example, used by law enforcement all the time to get criminals to confess to crimes or at least give up enough information to build a legitimate case.

Anyway, so here is what happened:

By asking a series of 14 questions in the way Jim Camp teaches, they got the Korean CEO to admit — without even realizing he was admitting it — that the contract they were negotiating was never going to be valid, because he was going to break it in 6 months anyway. And then, once he had gotten the funding, he was to force Jim’s client into Korean court for the next three or four years to get it resolved.

Needless to say, the Korean CEO’s hidden agenda was exposed.

And, Jim’s client high tailed it out of the deal.

But you know what the most amusing part was?

The Korean CEO didn’t even realize what he said and the information he gave up.

All because of a simple principle of negotiation Jim taught.

If you want to get someone’s hidden agendas, especially those wanting to screw you over (I could have used this info many times, in hindsight…) doing what Jim taught his client to do is the next best thing to filling up a syringe full of truth serum and jabbing it right into the person’s vein.
